This Is New York: 100 Years of the City in Art and Pop Culture

The Museum Of The City Of New York is celebrating its centennial with a very special exhibition through July 21, 2024. “This Is New York” is a multi-gallery exhibit that highlights the best of New York City, from landmarks to media… and everything in between!

Each section of “This Is New York” features a unique experience that will be sure to give you a taste of what New York City is all about. In the the gallery “At Home In New York” is an “Inside New York” digital bookshelf that brings books and DVDs to life with a dedicated sensor & projection setup. Check out classics such as I Love Lucy, The Jeffersons, Seinfeld, The Honeymooners, and Harriet The Spy:

For fans of the arts, “Tempo Of The City” is a gallery full of music and art, including photography, sculptures, and paintings. Get a close-up look at a Sesame Street lamppost, vinyl records, comic strips, and even issues of the New Yorker that depicted essential workers during the COVID-19 pandemic. But the standout feature of this section was definitely the interactive “Songs Of New York”, which utilizes dynamic floor technology to play songs inspired by the borough of NYC that you stand on:

Next, you’ll find all of the city’s famous spaces in “Destination NYC”. Among the highlighted locations are Times Square, Brooklyn Bridge Park, Coney Island, Broadway, Central Park, Madison Square Garden, and The Twin Towers. Also on display are costumes, historic moments, video clips, art, and popular comic books:

Finally, “You Are Here” is a gallery dedicated to film-making in New York. So much of what the world thinks & knows of NYC is found in movies & television, and the one-of-a-kind “Scenes From The City” installation immerses you in a 16-screen experience that plays clips from hundreds of iconic films such as Spider-Man, Godzilla, and Ghostbusters. As you’re surrounded by these scenes, you’ll also have the opportunity to see behind the scenes stills from Taxi Driver, You’ve Got Mail, Men In Black, and Sex And The City:

This 100 year celebration is definitely an exhibit you won’t want to miss! Be sure to visit the museum’s page for tickets and additional information.
