Next stop: a very fashionable MetroCard exhibit inside New York Transit Museum‘s Grand Central Gallery & Store! Inspired By MetroCard celebrates New York City’s now-discontinued public transportation fare card with stunning paintings, fashion pieces, and other works of art. This limited-time exhibition is on view through October 2026 and is free to visit.
A staple in NYC’s pop culture scene, the MetroCard has inspired artists and designers since its debut in 1994. On display are over a dozen paintings including painted MetroCards by VH McKenzie, as well as collages by Juan Carlos Pinto, Thomas McKean, and Nina Boesch (don’t miss her epic canvas collage of Katz’s Delicatessen!). You’ll even find three MetroCard dresses dating as far back as 1998 and Kenneth Cole booths from 2004. It’s amazing to see just how far this iconic card’s influence has reached over the years!
From layered creations to a display of 18 previous MetroCard designs, we’re talking about over 50 pieces featured in Inspired By MetroCard! While the MetroCard may now be retired, this exhibit is a wonderful opportunity to see its legacy live on through so many creative mediums.
