Japan Society is the premier organization connecting Japanese arts, culture, business, and society with audiences in New York and around the world.
From March 17 to June 25, 2023, Japan Society located in Midtown Manhattan (333 East 47th St. New York, NY 10017) has on display an exhibition by Japanese American artist Kyohei Inukai, 1886-1954.

Featuring his key bodies of work, this first Inukai solo exhibition highlights his various paintings & screenprints inside the landmark Japan Society’s art gallery.

Including never before seen pieces, this limited exhibition contains late career works like sumi-e (Japanese ink paintings). After passing the main floor’s waterfall & pool, you’re greeted by three extraordinary rooms of art, each filled with dozens of Inukai’s art.

With over 100 works in the exhibition, each one draws you in with Inukai’s abstract shapes and distinctive colors.

The pieces were provided to the exhibition courtesy of different estates, and are done on a number of mediums such as silkscreen, acrylic on masonite, oil on canvas, and a darkened hall solely devoted to sumi ink on handmade paper:

This third and final gallery of the exhibition was inspired by the concept of Japanese rock gardens where you can dwell on the abstract nature of the art and focus on the images themselves, allowing for a full immersion in the Kyohei Inukai experience.
