Phillipsburg Comic-Con 2019

Phillipsburg Comic-Con is an annual comic book show run by Phillipsburg High School’s Comic and Anime & Manga clubs, bringing comic creators, educational panels, and local comic shops to a low-income community! For its fifth annual show on Saturday, May 11, Phillipsburg Comic-Con hosted an exciting day filled with activities, raffles, and even freebies.

The comic con benefits many charities and good causes: on top of the proceeds for this year’s show going to RAINN to support women who have been victims of domestic violence, Phillipsburg was also distributing limited edition prints (with some of the artists even appearing in Artist Alley this year) in exchange for canned goods donations. They also held a charity Silent Auction on site, and annually run a Kickstarter campaign to help offset some of the event costs, with amazing rewards like signed comics, original art, and more!

This year, Phillipsburg boasted over 50 creators (artists, writers, designers) in their Artist Alley like headliners Fabian Nicieza (co-creator of Deadpool), Walt Simonson, Louise Simonson, Scott Hanna, Lee Weeks, and many more. With opportunities to meet all kinds of professionals in the comic industry, you could’ve walked away with a signed comic book, an art print, originals, or maybe even some critique on your own portfolio! (I personally got to get a couple prints signed by Fabian Nicieza, picked up a Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles RE [Retailer Exclusive] variant cover by Chris Campana, and commissioned Catalina Alejo for a Spider-Man sketch cover.)

Plus, there were several vendors specializing in comic books, action figures, Funko Pops, and even Lego minifigures. But whether you were standing on line to meet your favorite artist, circling around to find the best deal on a rare comic, or figuring out what panel to attend next, Phillipsburg Comic Con certainly maximized their 10am-4pm schedule. Kids even had a separate room where they could make their own foam lightsaber, decorate superhero cookies, participate in some face painting, and several other fun activities!

If this con hasn’t hit your radar yet, I’d highly recommend checking them out next year for their sixth show! Be sure to swipe through the gallery below for additional photos and video:
