TERRIFICON 2018 (Mohegan Sun, CT)

Held in the brand new Mohegan Sun Expo & Convention Center, TERRIFICON 2018 boasts amazing comic book creators like Jim Starlin, Roy Thomas, Joe Sinnot, Mike Zeck, Joe Rubenstein, and over 65 more. Plus media guests like Pom Klementieff, Ralph Macchio, Henry Winkler, Khary Payton, Lou Ferrigno, Greg Cipes, and AMC’s Comic Book Men!

Right off the bat, I felt that TERRIFICON was a perfect blend of all fandoms, whether you’re into vintage comic books, meet & greets, cosplay, or collectibles, there was a little bit of something for everyone! So let’s take a look at what goes on inside, and don’t forget to check out my video at the end of this post!

With it being Superman’s 80th birthday, TERRIFICON took it upon themselves to attempt to break the Guinness World Record for “Most Contributions to a Greeting Card”. Fans gathered to wish a super birthday to the Man of Steel on a custom card measuring 5 ft. by 24 ft., featuring art by legendary artist Jerry Ordway.

Then passing this hall leads you to the main entrance to the show floor with a special welcome by the mad titan himself, Thanos!

Make-up, costume, and special effects company Decimated Designs created this large scale photo op (which Thanos creator Jim Starlin signed), not only so that fans could “snap” a photo with Thanos but also to enter a special contest by Decimated Designs.

There was a lot of energy all weekend as cosplayers spread out across the convention center, comic book fans lined up to meet iconic creators, and vendors offered specialized & unique merchandise:

Jackie Stier Copper Creations is a great way to showcase your favorite franchises, logos, quotes, etc. in a truly remarkable way. She designs these copper displays as plaques, framed art, and just about anything you can think of!

Not only that, 3D Printing by Muckychris was back at it again with some amazing pop culture 3D printed sculptures, keychains, and geeky apparel:

And while there were aisles and aisles of vendors, there were also some great artists selling prints, originals, and even offering in-show commissions!

One particular artist that caught my attention on Instagram prior to TERRIFICON was freelance illustrator and Zenescope Comics artist Kevin McCoy.

Kevin had some really cool prints and mini-prints available. And as a fan of the CW DC Comics television shows, I had to pick up a few of his works:

I even got the Arrow print signed by Marc Guggenheim (television producer & Marvel Comics writer), who by the way, is a really nice guy! He brought up the prints in my hands before I even said a word. Plus we got to chat about the last season of Arrow and a little about his current projects. Michael Jai White (Spawn & The Dark Knight) stopped by his booth too since he appeared in Guggenheim’s second season of Arrow.

But I was particularly excited to meet Michael Zeck and Jim Starlin because of their significant impact in comics with Zeck’s black suit Spider-Man and Starlin’s Thanos & Infinity Gauntlet!

If you’ve never been to a comic con before, you might be thrown off by some of the long lines but if it’s someone you want to meet then I highly recommend the wait! These are once in a lifetime opportunities and some of my favorite moments are from standing in line with anticipation to meet artists, writers, and celebrities.

I almost missed my chance to meet Jim Starlin, but with a little planning and much urgency, I was able to make it before he left for the day:

I’ve found that TERRIFICON was perfect for all ages. It appeared to be great for families and even had sections designated for kids too!

On top of that, there were several rooms devoted to gaming – from computers to retro consoles…

Needless to say, TERRIFICON lived up to its name!

It was my first time attending and it certainly won’t be my last! I really enjoyed meeting artists Jim Starlin, Michael Zeck, John Beatty, Chris Campana, Kevin McCoy, and Joe Corroney. And getting to talk to celebrities like Larry Kenney, Greg Cipes, Rafael Ferrer, and Marc Guggenheim was a lot of fun.

Here are some of the autographs I got from the show, and be sure to check out my full photo gallery on Facebook, as well as the video at the end of this post!

TERRIFICON will be back at Mohegan Sun from August 9-11, 2019! For more information, visit their website.
